Western States Teleport (WST) operates a 100% digital microwave backbone built to the highest carrier standards. The network has proven reliability demonstrated by the fact that it successfully withstood the Loma Prieta earthquake without downtime – unlike some fiber networks. The network utilizes very reliable “hot-standby” microwave radios (actually 1 for N) with 99.999% reliability so customers never see an outage due to a radio failure. In addition, all sites have back-up power sources consisting of a combination of high capacity battery and automatic switch over generator systems capable of running for days without commercial power.
